Perry Haddock

Perry Haddock was born in Berkeley, California, and moved to Vancouver at the age of seven. He attended Lord Byng Secondary and UBC, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He later completed a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, and recently retired after more than 20 years as a counselor in a Langley secondary school.

Although Perry was interested in painting from early on, it wasn't until he began a teaching career that he began to study art seriously. Following a fifteen-year period as a potter, Perry turned his interest to drawing and painting, eventually teaching art in high school and pursuing his painting through college classes and workshops. He is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the B.C. Art Teachers' Association.

For Perry, art is simply a way of expressing mood. Whether he paints or sings or plays a tuba, he's expressing his personal reaction to his world at a given moment, so he wants his paintings to reveal something of his emotion and personality to those who see them.
Perry chooses watercolour and acrylic as the "freshest" of mediums, and enjoys the interplay of purpose and accident that the quick drying water media allow him to explore.

Although his subjects range from Italian coastal bays and Parisian markets to western Canadian landscapes, he is always searching for the simplest expression of the moment, the image that evokes an impression rather than a detailed rendering. Perry's paintings are available at the Birthplace of B.C. Gallery.
